Blockchain Technology to Change the Healthcare Industry
Every time you go to a new doctor, they tell you to arrive a half hour before your appointment to fill out paperwork. It is the same paperwork that you have filled out several times before. If you are prescribed a lot of medications or if you have an extensive medical history, it could take you more than a half hour to write everything down. Then you have to wait for the receptionist to enter all of your information into the computer. Some doctor’s offices have gone ‘high tech’ and allow you to fill out your forms directly on a computer. The doctor may request that you provide a copy of past discharge summaries or lab results. In that case, you sign a release of information or request for a copy of your previous records. It could be weeks before your doctor gets your past medical records.Electronic healthcare records (EHRs) should be congregated as a single record on the Blockchain so that the scattered records for the same patient are easily accessible to authorized practitioners. Blockchain technology in healthcare makes it possible to securely access patient information from individual facilities and create a distributed, lifetime EHR for every patient. By introducing a distributed EHRs system, multiple healthcare providers can view a patient’s EHRs, allowing doctors to give the best care possible. A distributed EHRs system will also help EMS personnel and Emergency Room physicians recognize any medical conditions or allergies a patient may have.Sharing your healthcare information should be as simple as granting your doctor access. Your doctor will be able to see your complete health history including any hospitalizations, surgeries, and laboratory results. The doctor will also know all the medications you are prescribed. With the Internet of Things (IoT), it is also possible to link healthcare applications that are on your smartphone to your healthcare record so that your doctor can assess your health in and outside the doctor’s office. This is just another way that blockchain technology will revolutionize the healthcare industry.
